Discovery of the First Better Potato
|
Robert Campbell, General Manager and Vice President of California Oregon Seed, Inc. (or Cal-
Ore Seed) and Discovery Garden’s, knew a better tasting potato was possible and in 1989 he
set his mind to making it happen. With a keen sense of consumers' preference for a russet
potato he started looking at new varieties. Jim Camp, President of S.A. Camp Companies, which
is the parent company of Cal-Ore Seed, was looking to expand the seed potato company and
knew Rob's vision was a good investment. Rob joined Cal-Ore Seed in 1990, which provided
the means for making the vision a reality.

California helped as a spring
board for naming the variety. He
also wanted to call as well as
place, the Yukon Gold. The two
words were brought together to
re-name TX1523-1Ru/Y the Sierra
